Chapter Fourteen

Natalia had little sense of time as she sat on her cot in a basement cell, waiting, sleeping, waiting some more. With no natural light to go by, her day was divided by meals; porridge for breakfast, borscht for lunch, potatoes for dinner. It was sometime after her second lunch that she was finally summoned. Two guards led her in chains up an elevator and down the hall to a spacious office on the third floor. The name on the door read Colonel Andrei Orlov. Inside, a handsome, middle-aged man in a dark gray suit sat behind a desk. His hair was silver, neatly trimmed. The appearance was more of a businessman than a bureaucrat.

“The prisoner,” one of the guards stated the obvious as they stood in the doorway.

The colonel stood, sizing up Natalia. “Please.” He motioned to a chair and the guards swiftly swept Natalia into it. “You can wait outside,” Orlov said to the guards. “Please close the door behind you.”

“Yes, Colonel.”

Orlov waited for the guards to leave before he spoke again. “That was an impressive stunt you pulled out there on the river. Six of my best men, and yet still you managed to elude them.”

“Perhaps you need better men.”

If the colonel was annoyed by her comment, he didn’t show it. “And the semi-automatic pistol… Where does a nice university student come across such a weapon, let alone learn how to use it with such proficiency?”

“I have friends.”

“Yes, of that I am sure. And can you tell me, who are these friends?”

“I’d prefer not to say.”

“I see. You intend to make this difficult.”

“Who between us is making this difficult?” Natalia raised her arms to show the chains, fastened around her wrists and leading down around her waist.

Orlov shifted in his seat, drawing his shoulders back. “You may find this hard to believe, but I am probably the best friend you have right now.”

“I’ve never known a friend to lock me in chains.”

The colonel lifted a printed page from his desk and read through it. “This journalist, Roman Barkov, he is a friend, yes?”

Just hearing the name filled Natalia with rage. “I have nothing to say about that man.”

Orlov raised an eyebrow. “What surprises me most is that you seem to have no history. No past at all. How is it that a girl with no history is able to roam around the city with such a firearm, eluding capture? How is it that such a girl is able to travel with not one, but three passports, all with different names and nationalities? The colonel opened a desk drawer and pulled out the documents, flipping open one and then another. Perhaps these friends you mention are Americans?”

“You think I am a spy?!” Natalia was incredulous. Already she was in grave jeopardy, that much was clear, but how could she refute an accusation such as this? They would lock her up forever, if they didn’t just shoot her first.

“Or is it the Germans? You are better off telling me now.
